Old Maid Skit

This project involved the creation of a short video showcasing various lighting techniques, allowing me to experiment with studio lights and different approaches to lighting. This skit is inspired by the cliche and tropes you see in anime.

Overview

Process

Going into this assignment, I was really drawn to the idea of creating a dramatic piece since I’ve always associated memorable lighting with high-tension moments. But since my collaborators naturally have a comedic energy, I decided to mix in some humor while still keeping that dramatic edge.

The idea for the video came from classic anime clichés—those intense, over-the-top card game scenes, like in old maid. I thought it would be fun to bring that energy into a real-life skit, exaggerating the drama just like in anime.

Challenges

While filming, I quickly realized that working with studio lights takes a lot of trial and error. It wasn’t just about setting them up—it was about experimenting with angles and placement to get the right effect. Through that process, I gained a much better understanding of how small lighting adjustments can make a huge difference.

A challenge arose when the lighting kit from SAIT lacked a necessary cable, preventing access to all three lights. To navigate this setback, I improvised by utilizing available resources at my friend's house. Despite this hurdle, the final video's lighting turned out well, providing a sense of relief and accomplishment.
